Do you think you have a frozen pipe in your home? A frozen pipe can quickly turn into a plumbing emergency. Follow these steps to locate and fix the frozen pipe as soon as possible.
Locate the frozen pipe
If there is no water or only a trickle coming from a faucet in your home, the pipe leading to it is likely frozen.
Shut off water supply
The first thing you need to do if you suspect a frozen pipe is to shut the water off to the location of the frozen pipe to prevent a leak when the pipe thaws.
Open faucets
Opening the faucets will relieve pressure in the system and allow the water to escape once thawed.
Thaw the pipe
Use a hair dryer, portable space heater or hot towels to thaw the pipe. You should avoid using anything with an open flame.
Check for damage
Look the pipe over thoroughly to see if it bulged or split. If so, it will need to be repaired or replaced.
Restore water
Once the pipe is thawed, you can turn the water back on and check for any leaks.
Call plumber
If you are not able to find the leak or fix the issue, or if the pipe leaks or bursts, you should call a professional plumber.
